OPEN CALL - Explore the Identity of Dance Film trough Social Media

Are you an artist or researcher passionate about dance film and social media? Apply for our virtual residency to investigate how social media can elevate dance film as an art form.

We invite applications for a virtual residency for one art practitioner or researcher in the field of dance and/or film to explore the intersection of dance film and social media. This project aims to investigate how various social media platforms can be applied and used to expose and raise awareness about Dance Film as an art form.

Residency Period: March - August 2025
Salary: 70,000 SEK

Project Focus:
The selected practitioner or researcher will take an artistic and professional approach to studying social media, analyzing its ethical implications, and investigating how to ensure artistic quality while leveraging these platforms. The goal is to examine the benefits and impacts on the dance film field and its identity with a wider audience.

Objectives:

  • Investigate the use of various social media platforms.
  • Analyze ethical considerations and their effects on artistic integrity.
  • Explore how social media can influence the identity of dance films.
  • Ensure artistic quality while maximizing engagement with a broader audience.

Artistic Mentorship:
During the residency, the practitioner will receive mentorship from Benedikte Esperi, a Swedish performance artist, choreographer, and filmmaker known for her innovative work in dance and interdisciplinary arts.

Conclusion:
The project will conclude with a public presentation of the research findings, showcasing how the selected artists have conducted their investigations, along with the results and insights gained. This final presentation will be held at Konstbiografen in Katrineholm on August 23, 2025, featuring a public exhibition/workshop.

In addition, the findings will be shared in a professional presentation designed to offer valuable insights for industry professionals. The presentation will be accessible online and linked through Scenkonst Sörmland’s website, including written documentation and may also incorporate video or other multimedia elements.

Timeline:

  • Monthly Mentor Meetings: Monthly meetings are scheduled, with flexibility for adjustments in consultation with the mentor.
  • March: Start of residency.
  • April 5th: Presentation of work-in-progress.
  • April: Meeting with the reference group for a feedback session.
  • August 23rd: Presentation of work in Katrineholm at Konstbiografen.

Who can apply?
We invite art practitioners and researchers with an interest in exploring the identity of dance film in social media to submit an application.

Applicants must:

  • Have a connection to the Nordic countries, though the investigation can be conducted from anywhere in the world.
  • Attend virtual meetings with the mentor, with required in-person attendance during the Dansfilmsdagar on April 5 and the final presentation in August at Konstbiografen.
  • Be able to invoice for the project fee, which should cover travel expenses to and from Eskilstuna and Katrineholm for the two required in-person sessions in Sörmland.
